The following is a bit of information that will make your arrival and stay in St. John more comfortable.

Towels, Linen, Beach Towels, and Paper Products are supplied for your entire week’s stay. Maid Service is not provided, but it is available at an additional cost should you request it. The cost for a maid is paid directly to the cleaners. Guests should purchase any additional supplies needed. We will provide you with a St John Guest Guide and a map of St. John at check-in. We suggest you leave the map of St. John in your jeep so you have it with you on the go. but most importantly we want you to have the best vacation possible, so think Left, Relax, and enjoy the beautiful island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

We would like to mention a few normal precautions to ensure that your stay runs smoothly:

  1. Please be sure to lock all doors and windows in your villa every night and every time you leave the villa.

  2. The villas all have safes, so please be sure to place all your valuables, including cash, cameras, electronic equipment, etc. in the safe. It would be wise to do this during the day and night.

  3. If you have something large and it does not fit in the safe, do not leave it lying out in the open. Find a spot to store it, but not so good a spot that you forget about it when you leave!

  4. Keep the outside lights on all night if that’s what makes you feel comfortable.

  5. Should you see anyone trying to break into your villa, please call the police at 911. Once you have contacted the police, call our office at 340-776-4703. If no one is available at the office, please leave a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

These precautions are not at all meant to intimidate, but are rather a reminder to keep your guard up no matter where your travel destination is. We want you to have the best time here in the Virgin Islands and we look forward to having you join us again in the future. If you have any questions regarding the above information, please feel free to call us at our office number (340-776-4703).

things to know for your vacation

We are delighted that you have chosen St. John and one of our beautiful villas for your stay. To get the most out of your Virgin Islands vacation, pick up the St. John guidebook as well as the map of St John. They are free at shops, restaurants, and at our office. The first few pages of our local telephone book also contain a wealth of information for you.

Here is a list of things we think you should know:

  • Air Conditioning- Please shut off all units while gone for the day. They work quickly, so when you return you can cool down the house. Keep doors closed in bedrooms while home and when the AC is running. If the AC unit drips, the AC has frozen up. Shut it off and let it unfreeze. Do not put the AC below 72 degrees fahrenheit (22 celsius).

  • Babysitters- We can provide responsible baby sitters at your villa if we are given notice in advance. Preferably, we would discuss this prior to your arrival date. Our babysitters may need transportation and will charge about $18.00 per hour.

  • Provisioning- Before you arrive, We can send you a list of provisions and have your villa stocked the day of your arrival. You may also contact us about having prepared food delivered for your arrival date. Upon booking your reservation, you will receive our greeting letter where we have listed several recommendations for provisioning. If you have any other questions, Don’t hesitate to ask us for our assistance!

  • Beaches- Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are located on St. John. Some of our favorites include Hawksnest, Solomon, Jumbie, Maho, Salt Pond, Lameshur, Vie’s on the East End, and Reef Bay, all of which offer excellent swimming and snorkeling. All beaches are public and we suggest you explore and find your own favorite.

  • Caribbean greetings/manners- You will be greeted with another culture here daily, Please learn a bit about the culture before you arrive. Please remember to start all conversations with a  “Good Morning”,  “Good Afternoon”, or “Good Evening/Good Night”. Virgin Islanders consider it bad manners to jump into a conversation without first addressing one of these greetings first. Also taking a moment to Learn about the culture is a great beginning to a lasting relationship with our home. Learn more about our culture here

  • Cell Phone service on St. John can be faulty at times. From our experience, AT&T seems to work best here in the Virgin Islands. If cell phone service is important to you and you don't have AT&T, we suggest getting a no contract phone to bring with you on your vacation.

  • Checking Out of Your Villa- Check out time is 10a.m. Please leave your key where your check in personnel has instructed.  Please do not leave wet towels in a pile — Due to the tropical climate they can quickly become musty and moldy. Hang them up somewhere before you leave. For more information on this, take a look at the departure guide.

  • Chefs- If you would like to get a chef for one or more meals in the villa, call us. Meals can either be dropped off or prepared in house. Private chefs are best arranged before your arrival and availability and price vary greatly. If you are already on island, these services need to be arranged at least 48 hours or more in advance.

  • Cisterns will occasionally run dry, which results in no water. All that is required is a switch of cisterns, which we can do quickly. Please call our emergency number if this situation occurs. We try to make ourselves available as much as possible, but should you call late at night we are likely asleep and will resolve the problem first thing in the morning.

  • Dress Code for the Island-This is an exceptionally casual place and no neckties are required. A nice shirt and slacks are fine for dining out, even for women. “casually elegant” is the password here. But going barefoot or shirtless is considered rude here. Never wear your bathing suit without a cover up into a public place, especially not into any restaurant (unless located on the beach). This is considered disrespectful by the locals and Police, and could result in a fine.

  • Drug Store- Chelsea Drug store is located upstairs from Starfish Market in the St. John Market Place. If you have questions about their services, contact them at 340-776-4888.

  • Duty Free Allowance- Americans returning to the US from the U.S. Virgin Islands are allowed up to $ 1,600.00 in duty free items. You may also take home 5 fifths of liquor per adult, or 6 if the 6th item is Cruzan Rum or Southern Comfort (all made in the USVI).

  • Extermination in the villa is done each month. Landscapers, pool, and Jacuzzi service will be done once a week. Pools are taken care of on the day of your arrival and once during your stay. Weather may cause the pool to be cleaned several times during the week. The pool cleaners are friendly people, so please say hello.

  • Flowers-Try Bou-Qet, Next to the Lime Inn restaurant, for all your flower needs from anniversaries to weddings.

  • Gasoline- There are three gas stations on St. John. E&C is located just past Market Place on the left. It is open 7 days a week and most nights until 7pm. Race Track gas station is about one mile from E&c on the way to The Westin Resort. Race Track is open everyday from 7:30am to 10pm. Midway gas station is on your way to Coral Bay, taking Centerline Road. They are open from 6am to 5pm and they pump your gas for you.

  • Gas/Propane- Most villas use propane for the stove and barbeques. If you run out of propane please call the office. We will have the tanks filled within a day. Some stoves require a match to ignite.

  • Garbage and Trash- St. John does not have house-to-house trash collection, so bagged and tied garbage bags must be taken to one of the many green or red metal dumpsters scattered along our roads. Just toss your bag in one on your way to the beach or to town. We do recommend daily disposal, as this will help prevent unwanted visitors coming to your villa.

  • Groceries- There are numerous small food stores on St. John. Dolphin Market, Pine Peace Supermarket, St John Market, and Starfish Market are located in Cruz Bay. In Coral Bay there is Love City Mini Mart and Dolphin Market (7:00am to 10:00pm). Driving out towards the South end of the island, Calabash Market is just before the Calabash Boom housing complex.

  • Little ants, Lizards, Moths, and Creepy Crawlers- Keep them out of your way by never leaving any food out, wiping up spills and crumbs immediately, and disposing of your garbage frequently. The Presence of These Insects do not mean your villa isn't clean. We are in a tropical environment and these small pests are expected.

  • Inventory- We operate on an honor system, and will appreciate hearing from you right away if something is accidentally broken or lost. We inventory linens and towels after your departure and will regretfully charge your damage deposit for missed items. Please make sure that towels are not forgotten at the beach or blown off the railings outside, as we will charge $35.00 from your security deposit for each misplaced towel.

  • Laundry- Most of the villas have a washer and dryer for guest use. Help yourselves, but please remember to conserve water by only running the machine with a complete load. This goes for the dishwasher as well.

  • Maid Service and Cleaning- All of our properties are cleaned and prepared before your arrival. If you would like extra maid service, call us and we will arrange it with advance notice, preferably 48 hours or more in advance if schedule permits.

  • Medical- DeCastro Clinic in Cruz Bay has Nurses on duty 24 hours. A Doctor is available from 7am to 7pm and on call from 7pm to 7am. Please Call 911 for Emergencies!!

  • Myrah Keating Smith Clinic- Located at the top of Gifft Hill Road. They are open 24/7. For questions and appointments contact the clinic at 340-693-8900.

  • Night Life- We love music and dancing and there is always something going on. For a listing of activities read the Night line column in “Virgin Islands This Week” or purchase the Friday edition of The Daily News for a complete rundown of all the activities on St. Thomas and St. John.

  • Noise and Partying-Some of our villas are in residential areas, so if you plan to have a late night blast, please be considerate of your neighbors. Many of our villas have indoor/outdoor speakers. Conversely if you are disturbed by anyone in your neighborhood, please be sure to contact us so we can help provide the peace and quiet you want. Each neighborhood has a noise control ordinance that is enforced by the local Homeowners association and supported by the local Police Authority (340-693-8000).

  • Phone- When using the landline, please only make local calls. We ask that you use your cell phone to make long distance calls. Should there be any long distance calls on your phone bill, you will be charged a service charge along with the calls.

  • Plumbing- Just as in the US, plumbers are very hard to get here on the island! With that in mind please do not flush anything down the toilet that you did not eat first. Many villas have water saver toilets, which are much too delicate for foreign objects or personal products.

  • Pool Men, Pest Control, and Gardeners- Pool service is done the day before or on the morning of your arrival so your pool is in tip-top shape for your use. But if you find some leaves or a stray moth has blown into your pool look around the deck area and there should be a net you can use to fish these out. Our exterminators try to schedule their essential service when the villa is vacant. They work quickly and will try not to get in your way, if you have any questions or problems just phone. Gardeners come and go at will but never have access to the interior of your villa. Our gardeners are all lovely people, so don’t hesitate to say hello!

  • Pool Safety- Never dive into your pool. They are not deep enough and you could be seriously injured. Please watch all children and partying adults carefully and do not allow anyone in your group to run around the pool deck, as someone could slip and fall.

  • Power Outage- Once in a while our local electric company “WAPA” has a power outage, which may last for a few minutes or a few hours. During an outage do not run the water. The water pump is electric and running the tap or flushing may cause the pump to lose its prime and the plumbing pipe system will end up unlocking. Wait until electricity is restored to use the water, but If you must flush, use a bucket of water from the pool and pour it directly into the Toilet bowl itself. In the case that the power goes out at night, You will find flashlights and candles in your villa provided for your use.

  • Refrigerator- With large groups the strain of opening and closing the refrigerator doors throughout your stay can wreak havoc on the units. We recommend using the coolers provided at the villa to cool down drinks. That way every time someone goes for a drink it will be guaranteed cold. If you do not follow this recommendation there is a possibility that the freezer portion of the unit could freeze over, causing ice blockage as a result of the doors opening and closing so frequently. If this happens the refrigerator portion will warm up and could cause food spoilage. This recommendation is our effort to avoid this issue.

  • Scuba Diving- Highly recommended for all. If you are not certified, most dive operators offer special instruction and certification programs. Call Low Key Watersports at 340-693-8999 or Cruz Bay Water Sports at 340-776-6234.

  • Safety-Although St. John has very little crime, we tell all our guests to lock your villa during the night and when you leave for any length of time during the day. You are responsible for the villa and its contents while you are renting it. do not take your valuables to the beach and never leave anything important in your vehicle. Instead, secure your belongings in the safe at your villa. We want to remind our guests not to do anything you would not do in your own home. Make Use of your common sense and you’ll have a stress-free holiday.

  • Seatbelts- The U.S Virgin Islands requires all front seat passengers to wear seatbelts and children under five to be belted in or in an approved car seat. The fine is $100.00.

  • sEPTIC- aLL VILLAS ARE ON SEPTIC. pLEASE DO NOT PUT ANYTHING DOWN THE TOILET OTHER THAN TOILET PAPER.

  • Sunscreen- In an effort to protect our coral reefs, the Virgin Islands has banned the use of sunscreens with harmful chemicals such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene. If you are packing sunscreen to bring on vacation please purchase brands that are reef safe. non chemical sunscreens use minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to block UV rays and they are much safer for our marine life.

  • Touring St. John-This is an island that begs to be explored. Get off the beaten track! Use your 4 wheel drive and go until the road ends. St. John has several overlooks, hideaways and hidden beaches. Go exploring! it’s safe, adventurous, and a lot of fun.

  • Tennis- St. John has 2 public courts located across from the car barge in Cruz Bay. They operate on a First come first serve basis and they are free. You may also want to consider the private tennis courts at the Westin resort.

  • Tile Floors-Many villas have ceramic tile floors which are beautiful and keep the house cool, But please be careful. some floors can become extremely slippery when wet, so watch your step.

  • Water Conservation-VERY IMPORTANT! Our main source of water is rainfall, which is syphoned from the gutters into the cisterns underneath the house. We check all our cisterns religiously before rentals to make sure you have enough water. In the event that our cisterns run dry, we have to have water delivered to the house in a tanker, and sometimes it takes more than a day or two to get the cistern refilled. a very long time during a vacation! So help us by never letting water run unnecessarily while showering or brushing teeth. Flush only when necessary, and take “California Showers”- wet down, turn water off while soaping up, then rinse quickly.

  • Is the Water Safe to Drink? - We have not had anyone get sick from our cistern water, which is filtered before it comes out of the faucets. But if you are nervous about it or if you have a jumpy stomach, we suggest that you buy bottled water at the grocery store. remember to use bottled water to make your ice also.

  • Viewing other Villas- If you would like to look at another villa for your next vacation, please call us at 340-776-4703 and make an appointment. If a villa is vacant we will be pleased to escort you on a tour.
